Clinical Genetics

What to Expect

A patient typically meets with a genetic counselor first. After determining the patients’ risk the counselor makes a decision if a follow up with a geneticist is needed. However, there are instances when the physician has to be involved from the initial visit, especially if it involves a physical exam. A review of family history and medical records, discussion about possible testing, disease management and appropriate referrals to other healthcare specialties usually follows.
